UQ School of Design
Educational Building
2023 (Year 3)
Due to the harsh, narrow site and neccessity of the brief to retain the prominent on-site trees, a contextually sensitive design is required. Instead of the large volume sprawling across the site, eliminating views and light from the surrounding buildings, it is proposed the building is positioned outside the given site border, removing an existing carpark and transforming the on-site trees into a greater courtyard which can service all surrounding buildings and activate the area. Further activation includes an ampitheatre, catering for bicycle use, and a ground level cafe.
The building form is also contextually-sensitive. The brick facade with an exposed concrete structure references surrounding buildings. Its shape is unimposing on its surroundings while generating ideal views.
