Mirndiyan Gununa
Located on Mornington Island (North Queensland), the proposed Mirndiyan Gununa Art Centre solves issues of client privacy as well as responding to the challenging cyclone-prone, hot climate.
The painting studios have large sheltered verandah spaces and are organised to capture prevailing winds. Large uplift polycarbonate doors blur the threshold between interior and exterior, providing flexibility, shading, light, breezes and privacy. The construction is timber and steel post and beam which allows for large openings while remaining strong to withstand cyclone conditions. The walls are SIPs for insulation and ease of construction
The central area features a double roof system with a butterfly roof to collect rainwater into a box gutter and tank. The painting studios use a separate layer of insulation above the rafters in the roof to provide extra insulation. Both roofing techniques result in a cooler environment for occupants.
